LLSC meeting 3rd December 2025 – Nuthurst Grange Hotel
The Lapworth Ladies Supper Club gathered at Nuthurst Grange Hotel for the last event of the year on Wednesday 3rd December. The dining room was elegantly decorated for the festive season and to add to the spirit of Christmas, members and guests enjoyed the music from a quintet as they arrived. A three course meal was followed by coffee, mince pies and mints as Maggie Farmer began to entertain us with Christmas songs and anecdotes.
Maggie has been singing professionally since she was in her thirties – singing in a swing band, a
symphony orchestra, a rock and pop band and a duo it became a way of life for her. Maggie sang an array of songs including old pop songs, classic Christmas songs and even carols. Much to our delight Maggie encouraged us to join in and sing along with her making it a very special and lively evening.
We wish to thank the quintet for their wonderful welcoming music and to Maggie for entertaining us with songs peppered with Christmas anecdotes and fun facts. Our thanks also go to all the staff at Nuthurst Grange Hotel for a lovely meal and their friendly and efficient service.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 7th January 2025 at Hogarths Hotel. Please note that arrival is no earlier than 7pm for 7.30pm sit down. Howard Robinson will be our speaker for the evening and will be sharing with us The History of Salt – Its uses and abuses.
Please ensure that payments/bookings reach Heather Day as soon as possible and no later than 10pm Tuesday 30th December 2025 but, if possible, preferably before Christmas.
LLSC meeting 5th November 2025 – Forest Hotel, Dorridge
Over 40 members and their guests of The Lapworth Ladies Supper Club met at The Forest Hotel on Wednesday 5th November. Attendees enjoyed a 2-course meal followed by tea and coffee and a presentation from Quintin Watt about The Bromsgrove Guild of Applied Arts.
Quintin gave a brief, but most informative talk on the Rise and demise of the Bromsgrove Guild 1898-1966. The Guild included many forms of creative arts from sculpture to embroidery and furniture making to jewellery to name but a few. Although the Guild could loosely be described as a workers cooperative it would be a mistake to think that it was just restricted to crafts and trades from the local and surrounding areas. Indeed, the Guild built such a reputation that in time the membership included businesses based nationally and on the continent.
Probably the Guild’s most famous commission are the gates of Buckingham Palace built in 1905-1908. However, some might argue that the Liver Birds on top of the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool are more impressive. Another of the Guild’s works are the sculptured stags that adorn the steps in the grounds of Andross Castle, in the Scottish Highlands, where the BBC TV programme, The Traitors is filmed.
The Guild prospered and grew rapidly during the early years. Nevertheless, in spite of its success, after WW1 a lot of young men favoured employment in manufacturing rather than art and design and so began the demise of the Guild. By the 1930’s it comprised mainly of design and manufacturing of metal works.
The committee and members wish to thank Quintin for a fascinating and lively presentation and the Forest Hotel staff for their friendly hospitality and providing a delicious meal.
Our next meeting will be at Nuthurst Grange on Wednesday 3rd December 2025. After dinner, Maggie Farmer will be entertaining us with festive songs and anecdotes. As this is our Christmas event, we extend the invitation for members to bring along male guests, if they wish. We invite member and guests not to arrive before 7pm for 7.30pm sit down.
Please ensure that online payments, cheques and booking forms reach Heather Day as soon as possible and no later than 10pm -18th November. Please contact Heather Day 07790947986 or Yvonne Joyce 07939141538 with any queries.
LLSC Meeting 1st October 2025 – Olton Golf Club
Members and their guests of The Lapworth Ladies Supper Club met at Olton Golf Club on Wednesday 1st October for the first event of the season. Olton Golf Club served a delicious meal of roast salmon fillet with hollandaise sauce and seasonal vegetables followed by Chocolate Brioche pudding and custard, tea and coffee. We were joined by Ryan and Amy Jackson, founder members of the Lily Mae Foundation.
*Ryan and Amy gave a most informative talk on how following a personal tragic experience they courageously went on to form the Lily Mae Foundation.
The audience was captivated as they recalled their personal story and described the emotional
trauma they felt individually and as a family. Channelling their grief and their need to have their daughter’s birth and passing acknowledged, Ryan started to raise awareness by fundraising. Before too long this husband and wife team structured their efforts and decided on the most meaningful ways they could utilise the raised resources.
The charity has developed over the years currently supporting 16 hospitals in the West Midlands and Warwickshire regions. The Lily Mae Foundation provides memory boxes, one to one bereavement support, therapeutic play sessions for siblings and sibling support days. In 2020 Ryan started a Pod cast which, while reaching a wider audience and extending their beneficiaries, has become internationally recognised.
In addition to a donation from the supper club the committee organised a raffle and were delighted to triple the original donation with the proceeds. We wish to thank members and guests for their generosity, Olton Golf Club for their hospitality and providing a delicious meal and of course Ryan and Amy for their moving and inspiring presentation.
